Mets, Yanks MLB Draft Projection

21 and under recently made an updated mock MLB 1st player draft. It is a good site that does not just list the players by talent, but takes into account how the team usually drafts and sign ability issues.

The Mets are projected to make these 2 picks:

18. Eric Hosmer, 1st
Hosmer is one of the top talents in the draft coming out of high school, but is a Scott Boras client which is the reason for the drop. Two comparisons I have heard are Casey Kotchman and Mark Teixeira. He is 6'4 and shows potential for power to all fields with great defense. Baseball America listed him as the 5th best prospect.

22. Lance Lynn, RHP
Lynn is another huge man at 6'5 260 lbs. He features a "heavy" non sinking fastball that sits at 92-94 mph and gets a lot of swings and misses, a good curve ball that is used as an out pitch, and a below average change-up. He is a safe college pitcher that is ranked 25 on Baseball America's top prospect list.

And the Yankees 1st round pick:

28. Sonny Gray, RHP
Gray's height is a question mark at 6'0 and is closer to 5'11 and 185lbs, but that does not take away from his talent. He can hit 94-95 mph with his fastball and sits around 92 and his slider is filthy and can go as high as 85 mph. His height and commitment to Vandy is the reason he may fall to the Yanks, but if they draft him they will sign him. BA ranked him 23.

...If both teams make these picks you can call their selections very successful. The Mets could easily select Sonny Gray with the 22nd pick if they want better value, but it is safer if they take one high school player and one college player. The Yanks system is so stacked everywhere that it won't matter who they pick. A shortstop would be one of their biggest needs, but there is no one worthy to be picked in here out side of Gordon or Tim Beckham who will both be long gone.
