NY Scoreboard 3/31

The Mets had a great opener with Johan being Johan and Wright going 2 - 4 with 2 doubles and driving in 3. Beltran also hit the ball well also getting 2 doubles. Thanks to Nady the Braves lost a crazy game they should have never been close to winning.

The Yankee season opener was rained out, but is rescheduled for tomorrow at 7 p.m. Wang vs. Halladay is still the match up.

The Islanders were not in action today their next game is Tuesday, April 1st against the Devils.

The Rangers won a huge game against the Penguins thanks to the overtime heroics of Chris Drury and Jaromir Jagr's ridiculous goal that went in off the goalies head.

The Knicks were not in action tonight. Their next game is Sunday, April 6th against the Magic.

Johan El Magnífico

Well we all got just what we have been waiting for. Johan Santana was just amazing in his 1st start for the Mets. He retired the 1st 9 batters and should have had a 10th, but the ump missed a
fastball right down the middle for strike 3 and went on to walk the batter. The next to guys were sent down and the inning should have been over, but then Josh Willingham hit a 2-run homerun being the only 2 runs Johan gave up. He then went back to his old Johan ways accumulating 8 strikeouts over 7 innings giving up only 2 runs on 3 hits. Hopefully this is a what we will be seeing all season and this what we all expect and so does he. He managed to do this throwing mainly fastballs and change-ups rarely throwing his slider.
There is a video of the start in the wrap.

Mangenius Safe No Matter What

NY Daily News:
"Chad Pennington is not going anywhere this season. The Jets will not trade him. And Eric Mangini and Mike Tannenbaum aren't going anywhere next year even if the Jets follow last year's dreadful season with another one just as bad.

Even though he has a chance to win back the job he lost to Kellen Clemens last season, a source told the Daily News Sunday that at the scouting combine in Indianapolis last month, Pennington's agent and Tannenbaum, the Jets' GM, had one conversation about whether the Jets would trade him.
Tannenbaum's answer: No."

Who wouldn't want to have Mangini around or Pennington as a backup? Pennington is the ideal backup, veteran who can come in and make short, crisp passes taking you down the field. Was Mangini not the coach who recently lead a Jets team who everyone thought would suck to the playoffs? I know Jets fans who said they would have been happy with 5 wins that season and Mangini earned his nickname taking that team to the playoffs. Jets should see some improvement going AT LEAST 6 - 10 possibly 8 - 8.

  • Guard Chris Snee will not report to voluntary work outs because he wants a new contract.
  • Osi Umenyiora is going to skip TRAINING CAMP not just the voluntary workouts because he also wants a new deal.
  • Plaxico Burress is sitting out of most of camp because of a separated shoulder, but Plax showed last year that practice doesn't matter for him. As AI would say we are talking about practice.

2008 New York Yankees Lineup

Opening Day Lineup
1. Damon, LF
2. Jeter, SS
3. Abreu, RF
4. Rodriguez, 3B
5. Giambi, 1B
6.Cano, 2B
7. Posada, C
8. Matsui, DH
9. Cabrera, CF

You can see the big surprise is that Cano is batting 6th and it is the right move. He is one of the best 2nd baseman in the league hitting for a high average and some pop. With Damon at the top and Melky at the bottom you have people to get you going and steal some bases. Andy Pettitte is on schedule to pitch on Saturday.

Go Big Pelf!

Today the Mets made the announcement on who was the #5 starter El Duque or Big Pelf. Despite having poor performances at the end of spring the Mets chose to go with Mike Pelfrey and put El Duque on the DL so he could have sort of an extended spring training. We have to remember Pelfrey is still only 24 and someone like John Maine didn't put it together until he was 26 and look at what he turned into.

They also decided to go with Brady Clark over Fernando Tatis which was the right move and I am glaad the realized that even though there were reports that Tatis was going to win the spot.

Their last decision was over the last bullpen spot and Joe Smith took those honors beating out Nelson Figueroa, Brian Stokes, and Ricardo Rincon.

Here are the 2008 New York Mets:

Starting Rotation:
1. Johan Santana
2. Pedro Martinez
3. Oliver Perez
4. John Maine
5. Mike Pelfrey

Bullpen:
Closer: Billy Wagner
Aaron Heilman, Pedro Feliciano, Scott Schoenweiss, Joe Smith, Jorge Sosa, and Matt Wise.

Line-Up:
1. Jose Reyes, SS
2. Luis Castillo, 2nd
3. David Wright, 3rd
4. Carlos Beltran, CF
5. Carlos Delgado, 1st
6. Angel Pagan, LF
7. Ryan Church, RF
8. Brian Schneider, C

Bench:
Damion Easley, Marlon Anderson, Raul Casanova, Endy Chavez and Brady Clark

Jeter Lives On

Yankees LoHud Blog:
"Jeter bruised it during batting batting when he was hit by a groundball. That’s why he had only two at-bats. Jeter hid his right hand under his jacket so we could not see the wrap around his finger. “No story. Nothing happened,” said Jeter, who playfully ignored questions as he left the clubhouse. Joe Girardi said he expected his shortstop to be ready to go on Monday."

As you can see it is nothing serious. Expect him to start the season and continue to to be Mr. Clutch.

  • Joba Chamberlain picked up the win despite pitching only two-thirds of an inning and Chad Moeller hit an inside the park home run.

  • In Today Civil Rights Game the Mets defeated the White Sox 3 -2 due to a bad call when Ryan Church allowed hit the ball with his glove over the fence in a call that should have been a home run, but was ruled a single.

Avery = Charlie Sheen?

Sean Avery has tapped Rachel Hunter, Elisha Cuthbert, and Mary-Kate Olsen. So What Would Avery Do next? Apparently he decides to go after some freaky man like hooker seen in this link. Avery claims this is just a prank because of April Fool's day. But we all know he most likely did have a fling with this hooker, but what is the big deal? I mean he is 27-years-old and single. I mean it is not like he is married with kids like some former governor of New York that was also linked to this hooker. The only thing is that I hope this does not affect the Rangers run to and in the playoffs and is not a distraction.

Coles To Sign Extension?

UPDATE: Coles last 2 years will be guaranteed at $11 mill and he wil note have any years added to it.

2 contradicting reports here. The 1st one will come from the New York Post and the 2nd one ESPN.

1: "Laveranues Coles, who entered this offseason with two remaining years on his contract worth $11 million but wanted an extension to ensure he'd finish his career as a Jet, yesterday agreed to that extension. Terms of the deal were not immediately available, but it's believed Coles had either two or three years added to his contract."

2: "The New York Jets have guaranteed the $11 million remaining on the final two years of receiver Laveranues Coles' contract, a league source said Friday.Coles had been seeking a contract extension, but guaranteeing the remaining two years is an apparent compromise between the team and the receiver. Coles had been critical of the Jets earlier in the offseason for spending money on players from outside and not taking care of players already on the team. "

As you can see both are reporting two different reasons to why Coles reported to camp. Well just have to wait and see if he actually got the extension he wanted or not.

The Yankees are hopeful Pettitte will be able to pitch the fifth game of the season, but this gives them a little more flexibility. If Pettitte isn't ready to go then, perhaps Darrell Rasner will get the call. Jeff Karstens isn't going to be an option."

Darrell Rasner was also optioned to Triple A along with Jose Veras, Kei Igawa, Scott Patterson, and Edwar Ramirez.

Jagr to Omsk?

NY Daily News:
"It might not be on anybody else's list of global hot spots. But Jaromir Jagr has been unabashed in his affection for the southwestern Siberian city of Omsk and up front about his desire to one day play there again.
Next week, Jagr will get the chance to lay the groundwork for just such a return - or, at least, continue a dialogue that never has been interrupted - when he meets with Anatoly Bardin, the new general manager for Avangard-Omsk of the Russian Super League.
Bardin is flying to New York this weekend. And according to his team's Web site, "The main objective of the visit are the negotiations with the Czech forward Jaromir Jagr of the Rangers about his possible return to the 'Vanguard.'"
While it is also probable that Bardin will meet with Rangers GM Glen Sather to discuss a transfer fee that would enable 2007 first-round pick Alexei Cherepanov to get out of the final year of his contract with Omsk, Jagr told the Daily News following last night's victory over the Devils that he plans to get together with the team's representatives.
["He can come, it's no problem - we'll see what happens," said Jagr, who played for Avangard-Omsk in 2004-05, when a lockout canceled the NHL season. "I'm going to meet with them for sure."]"

I really think the Rangers need Jagr to succeed and I am not sure why they do not want him back as Jagr has hinted to. I would be sad to see such a great player leave to go to Russia for his final seasons of his career. Maybe something freaky will happen and Jagr signs for a couple more years and Alexei Cherepanov is allowed to break the last year of his contract and come over to the US next season.

In other Ranger news Prospect Park really wants the Rangers to sign David Skokan to a contract and are wondering why the haven't already and question the signing of Mike Taylor who was recently signed to an ATO (Amateur Tryout Contract)

Q and A with Yankees Future

I would like to thank Pablo Zevallos of Yankees Future who took the time to answer a few questions about the Yankee's prospects. The questions will be bold, answers normal.

1. You rank Austin Jackson higher than most even though he has only had one solid season in the minors. Is this due to his potential compared to other players?
Partially, but the results that manifested from Jackson were expected because he has the potential to be a 5-tool player, and the tools have always been there. He was arguably a top 10 (definitely a top 15) talent last year, and the results show that he has made his tools into solid results (.345/.398/.566 at High A Tampa). I would like to see more walks, and though the OBP is solid, the high batting average accounts for a disproportionately high amount of that, but that will come with time. His gap power should translate well into home run power eventually as well. A good comparison is Curtis Granderson in terms of what statistical output to expect.

2. Dellin Betances is a personal favorite of mine and after having an injury plagued season last year do you see him returning to Staten Island or playing a full season in Charleston?
Betances is a big question mark. He only pitched 25 innings last year, but if one follows the "30 rule", he will never get to 200 innings. He needs to prove he can handle at least 90, but more likely 100 innings this year, and have a healthy elbow as well. The walk problems were likely a result of the elbow issues, but the Yankees will likely be cautious with their precious giant and start him off at Staten Island. He should move on to Charleston before being shut down for the year.

3. Jesus Montero is just a HUGE man with amazing power. In the long run do you see him remaining behind the plate or will his bat push him over to 1st base?
Montero is indeed huge, and he has 80 raw power on the 20-80 scouting scale. He should be able to hit 40 home runs in his prime if pans out. His defense gets differing reviews, depending on who you read. With his size, agility behind the plate will be an issue, and the wear and tear of catching will eventually affect his bat. He probably can catch, as Joe Mauer of the Twins is 6'5" and 230 lbs, slightly bigger than Montero. Remember, he's only 19 at this point and will be at Class A Charleston, so there is still a lot to learn. In the end, whether he catches or not depends on a) who of him or Austin Romine reaches the majors first, and b) does Romine or Francisco Cervelli have enough bat to start on a Yankee lineup. My gut says that he will be a first baseman because Romine will be able to handle the bat well, and already has great defense.

4. Having as high a ceiling as anyone in the '07 draft the Yanks snagged Backman all the way at #30 because of his TJS. Did he fall to #11 on your list for the same reason? If he was healthy where would you rank him?
He fell to #11 in my ranking for that reason combined with his rawness and issues with his delivery. He has less than 150 innings under his belt in college, and his sophomore season was injury-riddled and disappointing. Part of the injuries, the elbow injury notwithstanding, was that he was a 2-way player in college, also playing basketball. His elbow injury has sometimes been attributed to how his college coaches tinkered negatively with his delivery. Despite this, he has the highest potential of anyone in the Yankees' system right now, right up there with Dellin Betances. He has the ability to be an ace, with his assortment of pitches, including an almost triple-digit fastball and trademark plus knucklecurve. If healthy, I would have put him at #5.

5. I have this feeling Joba Chamberlain will become the next Jonathan Papelbon and remain in the bullpen. Although if he turns out as dominate as Papelbon in might not be that bad. Do you see him moving into the rotation after the all-star break? If so who moves out to create a spot for him?
Joba will likely be a starter before the All-Star break. He'll likely be in the bullpen until June, when he'll be sent down to Scranton W/B to extend his arm with 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 inning starts, and then return to the Majors in early July. One of the pitchers at that point may be injured, so a spot may be filled there. Otherwise, a distracted/called under a subpoena Pettitte could have vacated a spot, or an ineffective Mike Mussina could be taken out. Hughes or, more likely, Kennedy can be demoted for ineffectiveness as well. But it would be hard to give him a spot without something going wrong (which would be bad), and even then Joba will have a learning curve in the majors while starting. Joba has ace potential, and it would be wasted if he can only pitch 70 innings a year. At this point, he'll have only one more year of innings caps and he'll be on his way to 200+ innings.

6. Future of Humberto Sanchez? Starter? Middle relief? Set Up? Closer?

Humberto Sanchez doesn't have much of a future on the team. He has the potential to be an upper-tier closer, like Jose Valverde, but the role of future closer goes to Mark Melancon, the highly-regarded 2006 9th rounder out of Arizona. Sanchez doesn't have a future as a starter because of never-ending injury issues, many (like his current knee injury) tying in to his weight and lack of conditioning. The Yankees already have surer bets as starting pitcher prospects, so Sanchez doesn’t fit there. The nearly-ready J.B. Cox has presumed the role of set-up man of the future. He has a plus heavy 92-95MPH fastball (tops out at 96), causing groundballs, and an above-average curveball, along with a changeup. That's enough of a repertoire to be a closer somewhere. That leaves his role to be a middle reliever, but he would be too good for that, and Ross Ohlendorf, David Robertson, Kevin Whelan, and Scott Patterson should hold that role down well in the future. So, on the Yankees, Sanchez is trade bait, maybe for a solid bat at first base. This puts a negative light on the Sheffield trade, because Claggett is a low-ceiling player and Whelan needs control to avoid being the next Kyle Farnsworth.

7. Quick projections on Generation Trey's individual performances?
Hughes: 165 IP 28G 28GS 13-7 145K 46BB 155H 3.50 ERA

Kennedy: 190IP 32G 32GS 14-10 175K 53BB 185H 4.25 ERA
Chamberlain: 140 IP 66G 14GS 9-5 155K 50BB 125H 3.05 ERA

Thanks again to Pablo for taking time to answer these questions for us.

"The Mets expect to make Orlando Hernandez their No. 5 starter if El Duque shows he is healthy Friday in his final Grapefruit League start, a team source said today.

Hernandez has the upper hand over Mike Pelfrey, Jorge Sosa, Nelson Figueroa and any potential free-agent additions if he holds up well in his start in Fort Lauderdale against the Orioles, the source said."

The odds are tomorrow we will get our answer when both pitchers will be facing the O's and are scheduled to throw 3-4 innings each. Pelfrey said he thinks he won't win the job and that is not how I want him to be mentally. He needs to get toughen up and believe in himself a little more.

Strahan's Agent Talking Contract

"And finally, Strahan is in Africa right now so there isn't much info yet on whether or not he'll return next year. One thing I do know is the lines of communication between the Giants and his agent on a new contract are officially open after more than a month of silence. There's no deadline here from the team, so it's unclear how long it'll be before a decision is made or a contract is reached."

I think Strahan will be back next year. It is always easier to come back when you are winning and the Giants just won the Super Bowl so they are as high as possible. Strahan was also playing at an extremely high level so just let him sit out training camp and come back to the season fresh and happy.

I don't see why a PTBNL would not work in a trade for Register. Either that or some random prospect who does not really project to be anything special. From what I've seen I want him back he was very effective and you can never have enough bullpen arms.

Plax is a Top Wide Receiver

ESPN made a list of the top 64 wide receivers in the league right now and Plax was the top NY wide out coming in at 9. 4 New York wide receivers made the list and here is how they all stack up:
9. Plaxico Burress
New York Giants
The talent has never been a question. The work ethic and inconsistency have. That changed in 2007 when, despite missing many practices with ankle and knee injuries, Burress was able to step up on game day and deliver for the Super Bowl champs. His size (6-5) is special. Even slowed by the ankle last season, he was regularly able to outjump defenders

32. Laveranues Coles
New York Jets
Coles isn't big (5-11, 193), but he is as tough as they come and the Jets' quarterbacks rely on him to get open. Coles has elite deep speed, but with the Jets' difficulties in pass protection and Chad Pennington's suspect arm strength, he hasn't been able to use these talents as much as expected. That could change with Kellen Clemens behind center and a revamped offensive line.

39. Jerricho Cotchery
New York Jets
He has a good feel for finding soft spots in zone coverage and can set up his defender well with his exceptional body control. He has steadily improved and his yards per catch was a career-high 13.8 yards last season. While his average was up, he is not a burner and will struggle to consistently stretch the field. The Jets' offensive line should give him more opportunities next season, but his ceiling is a No. 2 wideout.

46. Amani Toomer
New York Giants
After 12 seasons, Toomer clearly has diminishing skills, but he continues to be a reliable target who gets by with instincts, toughness and solid hands. He has no fear in traffic.

Giants to Host Redskins

NFL.com:
"The NFL's Thursday night season opener will match the Super Bowl-champion New York Giants and the Washington Redskins, with the game possibly starting an hour-and-a-half earlier to avoid clashing with the Republican National Convention. The game is now scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EDT on Sept. 4 -- the concluding night of the Republican convention -- and will be televised by NBC. League spokesman Greg Aiello said Wednesday that the NFL is talking with the network about changing the game's starting time to 7 p.m. The Super Bowl winner traditionally hosts the game. The Redskins' participation was confirmed by a person familiar with the NFL schedule who spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not announced it. The Washington Post earlier reported that the Redskins will be facing the Giants in the season opener. The highlight games of the NFL's first weekend will be announced Monday during league meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. The rest of the schedule will be announced later next month."

Fernando Tatis?

Well there are major signs after Gotay being put on waivers that Fernando Tatis may be the 25th man on the Met's roster. Here are what some Met's blogs are saying.

  • Metsblog "what we can logically assume here is that Fernando Tatis is now the leading candidate to round out the bench, meaning gotay has to hit waivers"
  • Mets Prospectus "Fernando Tatis fills every single one of these needs. The Mets don't need another fast guy on the bench because they'll already have Pagan and Chavez. This time last week I thought Brady Clark had the spot locked up, but as of now I have to think Tatis is in the lead."
  • MLB.com "Fernando Tatis earning a roster spot is enhanced due to the need for a right-handed bat off the bench.
I would really want to have Gotay he has so much more upside than Tatis. Tatis has showed some pop hitting 34 hr's one year, but hasn't played in the majors since 2006 and is now 33. The only reason I honestly remember who he is because I once got his baseball card and learned he was the only player to ever hit 2 grand slams off the same pitcher in 1 inning.

Pettitte Looks to be On Target

After previous reports that Pettitte's back had not improved MLB.com had this to say about the situation:

"Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte returned to action with a bullpen session on Wednesday morning, an encouraging sign as he shoots to pitch in the third or fourth game of the regular season.

If Pettitte reports to camp on Thursday with no issues, he would expect to throw another bullpen session that day. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that Pettitte would then pitch in a Minor League game on Saturday in Tampa, lining him up to pitch on April 3 against the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium.
If Pettitte feels some tightness and needs an extra day, he could also pitch on Sunday in a Minor League game and then take his turn on April 4 against the Rays, with Phil Hughes making New York's third start of the year."

This is good news for the Yankees, but bad news for Chris Woodward came today when they Yankees announced that he has been released from the team.

This or That: Mike Pelfrey or Jorge Sosa

Well last time it was Mike Pelfrey or Orlando Hernandez for the 5th, well now it is Jorge Sosa or Mike Pelfrey. Here is cases for and against each starter.

Mike Pelfrey
6'7 215 lbs.
1/14/1984
2 years MLB experience
  • Pros:
  • Fastball you can't teach
  • Filthy Breaking ball
  • Young/driven to win
  • Potential Ace Pitcher
Cons:
  • Very Inconsisten
  • Inexperienced
  • Control Issues
  • Still needs time

Jorge Sosa
6'2
220 lbs.
4/28/1977
6 years of MLB experience

Pros
:
  • Filled in beautifully when called on last year
  • Has a rubber arm
  • Versatile (can start or relieve)
  • Will let young players keep their options
Cons:
  • Does not have the best stuff
  • Can give up the long ball.... a lot
  • Does not do as well after teams get a look at him
Stuff: Pelfrey is clearly the one with better pure stuff. Like discussed last time his pitches just have filthy movement he just needs to learn to control his pitches and be more aggressive with his fastball. Sosa features a low to mid 90's fastball with little movement and a tight slider that could be called his best pitch. Sosa tends to throw the slider too much leaving it up some times resulting in the large amounts of homeruns.
Advantage: Pelfrey

Spring: Because of Jorge Sosa's spring he is in the conversation. He has pitched 12 innings, struck out 10, and has given up only 2 runs 1 earned for a 0.75 ERA! Pelfrey has had the complete opposite spring training. Pelfrey has pitched 17.1 innings, given up 29 hits, 17 runs, 16 earned, walked 7, gave up 2 homeruns, and struck out only 6. His ERA is 8.31!!!! Click here to see their spring stats lined up.
Advantage: Sosa

MLB Success: This is where both pitchers struggled. Click here for Sosa's stats and here for Pelfrey's stats. As you can see neither guy has pretty ERA's, although Sosa did have one amazing season with the Braves in 2005. Something I didn't know that is Sosa's next homerun he gives up will be his 100th career homerun given up, a proud stat to have. It is also pretty sad Pelfrey hit more batters in 19 games (12) than Sosa hit in 234 games (8)
Advantage: Push

Overall: My opinion has not changes on who I think will win the final spot. Sosa just was so much better coming out of the pen last year and was able to pitch back-to-back games effectively. So I guess you could say my opinion is based not on who is most deserving, but what would be best for the team. I also don't believe in babying players in the minor leagues. They are going to have to learn mental toughness and if they were meant to be great they will be great an extra year in the minors will not change this. The Mets would also be expecting less this year than in previous years so if he went 3-6 it would not be so bad with Johan, Pedro, Maine, and Perez so my answer is clearly.... Mike Pelfrey.
Advantage: Pelfrey.

BA Projects Big Things From Mets, Wright, and Johan

I was reading over at Baseball America I cam across this article about how the Tigers are "the team to beat". So while I was reading this and was looking at the article and I noticed the chart on the side with their predictions. So here is what they say about the National League:
Division Series
Cubs over Phillies(wild card); Mets over Diamondbacks

Championship Series
Mets over Cubs

MVP Voting
1. David Wright, 3b, Mets
2. Prince Fielder, 1b, Brewers
3. Mark Teixeira, 1b, Braves

CY Young
1. Johan Santana, Mets
2. Brandon Webb, Diamondbacks
3. Jake Peavy, Padres

World Series
Tigers over Mets

Now I love the Championship and Division series, but the World Series is kind of a bummer. After last season I would be happy with making it to the World Series, but I would rather win not lose. You also have to love the MVP and CY Young picks. How great would it be to have the Mets win BOTH kind of like when Johan was with the Twins and Morneau won the MVP wuth him. If the Mets finish 1st in the East and Wright puts up numbers similar or better than last year he will easily win it and I think Johan is just about everyone's pick for the CY Young and honestly why wouldn't he be? the guy is simply amazing. In the AL the predict Joba Chamberlain to finish 3rd in the rookie voting(behind Evan Logoria and Clay Buchholz) and A-Rod 2nd in MVP behind (Miggy Cabrera).

Jorge Sosa or Mike Pelfrey for the 5th Starter?

Mets.com:

"Jorge Sosa temporarily became an effective solution for a rotation problem the Mets developed in May. For five weeks, the castaway right-handed pitcher provided consistent performances, not to mention six victories in seven starts. Now, with the Mets less than a week from the beginning of their regular season, a similar problem exists. And the club is looking in the same direction for a solution."

SI:
"Mets decisionmakers appear set to overlook top pitching prospect Mike Pelfrey's poor spring and name him the No. 5 starter in coming days, sources said. Club officials will gather here Wednesday, but the momentum is strong for the righthander Pelfrey to get the nod despite a spring in which he allowed 36 baserunners in 17 1/3 innings."

I will be making a this or that on this situation later today.
